PwP Tips, Tricks and Tales
• Keep a sheet of sandpaper in the kitchen and use it to help unscrew a stubborn lid off a jar. Just wrap it around the lid and twist. – J. Geipel
• My partner has mobility difficulties as a result of her PD and finds it takes a long time to get from point A to point B. Problems arose when I would be in the garden and she would need me for assistance, or a telephone call and it would take time for her to get to me. We solved the problem with a cheap pair of two-way radios. Now I am easily accessible. – R. Seddon
• Physical difficulties with getting into bed have been solved recently by wearing satin pyjamas or using satin sheets or both at once! Not only does this help with getting into the right position easily, it helps to turn over in bed also. – J. Wilson
• When my tremor is at its worst – usually during my ‘off’ medication times – I find that using cutlery with thicker handles makes it easier to cut food. – R. Lee
• Drinking the recommended amount of daily fluids is difficult for PD sufferers as water can often be difficult to swallow. I discovered that carrying a water bottle with me whilst out of the house helps, as well as choosing high water fruits and vegetables, or foods that are liquid based. These all add to your daily intake! – S. J
• I am frequently told that exercise is beneficial for anyone with PD, but often felt unmotivated to partake. Recently, I joined a social sports team, and because we all play for fun, there is no pressure to perform well. It’s also a great excuse to catch up with friends regularly. – R. M
• Avoiding caffeine drinks such as coffee, tea or coke before bed time enhanced my quality of sleep immensely. – Jane
